Persuasive Technique - Motivate Them!

The pre-required condition of Motivate Persuasive technique is TRUST.

To persuade one to do thing for you proactively, one of the best way is to trust him, delegate the task, empower him the right, assign him more responsibilities.

Scenario: A manager assign a challenging project to a employee.

"This project required talent people, with good coordination skill, technical skill, and strong problem solving skill. I personally believe you are the best candidate for this project! Can you take up this project?"

Sound good? Beware to say it with more or less from your point of view. If you what you say is not what you meant, you employee will feel it, then he will just refuse or reject it, because he will feel this saying just lack of sincerity.

Compare to this:

"This is just part of your job, take up this project and show me the planning ASAP".

Do this kind of command work? You bet it. It will not work, unless you are in military that 100% follow instruction. Ask yourself, do you like it when someone say this to you? Eventhough it work, but taking up task reluctantly, the result also not promising.

Persuasive Technique - Analogy Comparison

This is part of How to Persuade People Effectively. Enjoy.

2). Analogy and Comparison Technique

This technique is about finding one statement that is easily accepted by people. Then analogically compare the statement with the thing that you want to persuade others. The trick is, when people already agreed to first statement, the he will be more openly accept second statement that have some similarity.

So, example speak louder than lengthy words:

Scenario: A sale person try to persuade his potential customer to buy new car, and change the old one.

Customer : Do you think i should to change a new car?
Sale person : Let me know, will you buy new cloth when your shirt is old and dull?

Customer : Yes. Of course.
Sale person : Heard you like traveling, do you travel to new interesting place? or just revisit same old places only?

Customer : Yes. New place is more interesting. i have a list of new places to visit.
Sale person : I see. Do you think want buy a new interesting car, or just stay on your existing old car?

Customer : Hmm.. Maybe you are right. I should buy a new car.
Sale person : Yes. You making the right choice!


One more tip, try to make them agreed on small small thing first, saying yes or nodding their head, then bigger thing can be agreed at higher chance. Many sale person are using this technique also.

Maybe you might think of "Sale person? It just not me", "I not a sale person, why should i care?". However, to persuade also mean to sell our idea to others. Infact, we are selling our idea when we talk!

How to Persuade People Effectively

Persuasive skill, the ability to successfully causing other person to do or consent to something.

Sometimes, we use persuasive skill unintentionally, without realizing it. No matter in friendship, in working environment, product selling, business negotiation, we are related to persuade activities. Hence, improve the art of persuasive skill, is one important ability to have in our life.

1). To Heart, To Feeling Technique
We human being, feeling and emotion are easily influence by others, when the right timing and right word is said, then we are more openly accept the persuasive attempt.

How it work? Let see example scenario below.

Scenario: A worker late for work because of hair-cutting, upon rush to office, manager caught him, and the manager want to persuade worker to finish the stacked task on hand and assign more task to him.

3 manager act and say differently, the outcome also different.

Manager A : "You are late, Quick! Go to work! Be sure finish your task before back ";

Manager B: "Hey! You change your hairstyle, just nice. But you are late today, Never mine, quickly go finish your task, then everything will be fine";

Manager C: "Are you OK? You are panting and seem very rush, must be something important happened. Is everything fine?";

Let's see the outcome:

Outcome of Manager A : Rigid command, simple language, lacking human feeling touch. The result is negative. The worker will have high chance not perform well on that day.

Outcome of Manager B : Start with personal feeling touch, then remind worker that he is late, then need to clear the backlog task on hand. The result is OK, worker more willing to admit the wrong-doing of late reporting to work, and do whatever he could to "reward" back the losing hours and perform better.

Outcome of Manager C : The manager show full caring, concern on his situation. The worker felt warm and might said : "My manager treat me not bad! How can i repay him for his understanding?" Guess what? the worker stay late that night doing over-time.

See the different? This is the power of To Heart, To Feeling Technique.

i want to share one Chinese proverb : 通情达理. When we build the common foundation feeling bridge between the 2 party(通情), only then, we willing to accept the rational reason,rule, regulation and comply to the them(达理).

Do you FAKE yourself when you working?


Have you ever think that, is it the REAL you? when you are in the working environment or office, Do you FAKE yourself? FAKE your emotion, your behavior? What you did and what ever action you take, is from your intention? Compare what you did and said in Company and in your home, is it the same or different? Or is it a true 'voice' deep in your heart is being neglected?

Until just now, i was refreshing myself few years back, from the moment graduate in University, then step in working life. People said working life and student life is totally different and many always said student life is paradise. Well, i agreed to the statement. Well, you might think i just a person that do not like to work. But, in deed, to some degree, i really do not like to work.

To me, working is just a exchange of labor, skill, experience for return, namely salary. We all know that, do well in your job, or i should say, give the impression that you are doing well, knowing from top to toe of your own job, task. Then, you are in a good way of salary increment, annual performance review, KPI review, etc..... All those is related to monetary return, how can a normal person resist the temptation of money??

i start working as programmer in my 1st company, to be honest, i like programming, enjoy the thinking of solution to problem, analyst the problem, design the code, make it happen and Wolla! a newborn program. But, what i dislike is the frequent change of user requirement from user, even after the user specification is fully buy-off. End user is demanding, they want whatever feature that they FEEL is nice, just plug from the air and WANT them. Surprisingly, my manager seem like keep on allow such thing to happen, accept whatever request and just hand to us to dig the detail. Below is the typical email that he send out to me.

i was not very happy on that. But i FAKE myself! i accept the task without making a noise, not a noise to my manager, not a noise to the end user. But a REALLY annoying noise to my inner-self. From outsider, i giving them the impression that i like to accept challenge. But the true-self is making resistance on it. What a pity!!

So, you FAKE yourself, pretending that you like the job that you hate, pretending the boss idea is the best while you can think of million of greater idea, pretending that you are happy and achieving something while you sometime bored to die. Just to name a few.

A joke of a conversation between Boss and Employee.

B: Tom, you are a hard working employee. Good job. Keep it up.
E: Then Boss, can i have a salary increment for my good performance?
B: Well, Tom, we work here not for the money, but is for the challenge we face.
E: Boss, why don't you give me your money, then i give you my challenge?


When you are not the REAL you, you can pleased most people, but you cannot escape from your self own guilty feeling of not being yourself. I admit i will not feel well, when i saying something that is not me. If you is FAKING, but you feeling nothing.. Terrible.. you successful lying to yourself already, is become part of you. Dangerous!!

Call for Action : Stop FAKE yourself in your working environment. It take courage to do that, you might get few people that surprise on your true saying, action that buried for years. Maybe end up someone will not happy for that, But when you honest to yourself, say what you meant, express the true feeling, you feel GREAT! You are true you. BE YOURSELF!!! Start from TODAY!!

Faster! Rolll the Raft! Faster!

There were one rich guy and 4 other persons on a rafting activity. At first, every thing just fine, until the weather turn bad, and sudden raining heavily.

"Faster! Roll faster! We're going to fall down to the cliff already!"
said the panicked rich guy.

"It is OK, everything still under control. The cliff still quite far away". One of the 4 persons said.

The raining keep on pouring, the flow of water become more and more drastic.

"I give each of you 1 thousand dollar, if you can save my life!". Once upon hearing that, the motivated 4 person increased their rolling speed. The raft seem moving a little bit fast.

"Faster! 5 thousand for each of you! Faster! Save my life!". Said the worried rich guy again after a while. This time, the raft seem like just stationary.

"What the heck those 4 person doing?! Not enough?"Rich guy in thinking.

"10 thousand!! for saving my life! Come on! Faster! Faster!". The raft still not moving forward. Finally, the raft and all of them falling into the cliff.

Luckily, they survived. "Why you all not trying your best when i offer the money?" asked the rich guy.

Then he said : "We were rolling fast at the beginning, but later on, we keep hoping you can give higher and higher money. we lost our focus and fall".


Take back : When at the moment justice speak, do not tempt it with money. Always, is money become the winner.
